DRAWING FROM BALLYCASTLE : A Sketchbook and Small-scale Drawing Workshop with Susan Hagen
March 7-15, 2021
This is a multi-level drawing class, with a focus on cultivating a practice of sketchbook work and small-scale drawing, using the media of graphite, conté, ink, watercolor, etc., on paper. It will include working directly with the landscape, animals, and people in Ballycastle and vicinity. There will be local models for portrait studies, and we’ll bring in animals for gesture drawing, and collect plants, rocks and bones for close-up studies. We will seek inspiration from the rich past and present of the Irish landscape by taking field trips to sketch local sites such as Downpatrick Head and the ruins of Moyne Abbey. Personal exploration of the landscape around the Centre will be greatly encouraged. Training the eye to look and building an individual drawing practice are the main goals of this workshop. In the process, traditions of storytelling, scientific observation, doodling, and decoration might occasionally be employed. There will be demos and suggestions for drawing strategies, along with informal discussions and critiques, and plenty of open studio time. One-on-one attention, focusing on both ideas and techniques, will be given to each student.
Susan Hagen is an artist, writer and educator who resides in the City of Philadelphia. Her primary interest is to convey, through the tactile forms of mixed-media drawing and carved-wood sculpture, some of the raw beauty in the world around her. Ms. Hagen’s current project, “Citizens,” is a series of works that celebrate the ordinary people who make up the fabric of urban life in Philadelphia. Ms. Hagen began a parallel body of work exploring rural animal life in County Mayo after being awarded a fellowship by the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in 2015, and she has returned several times to continue this series. Other honors include residencies at the McColl Center for the Arts in Charlotte and the Ragdale Foundation, Chicago, as well as artist’s grants from the George Sugarman Foundation, the Leeway Foundation, and the Independence Fellowships in the Arts. Ms. Hagen has taught workshops at Anderson Ranch in Colorado and Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, and is currently Associate Professor at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania. She has written hundreds of articles about art for publications and blogs, including the Philadelphia City Paper, Woodwork magazine, and the Artblog. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. Upcoming projects include a one-person exhibition at Adventureland Gallery in Chicago.
