Going Deeper: A Cold Wax Workshop for Advanced Abstract Painters
This workshop goes beyond technique into exploring ways to bring contrast and personal meaning to your abstract work. Focus will be on increasing your skill with the medium and tools, strengthening your understanding of abstraction, and on working with the visual elements and design principles to express your intentions. The course will include a balance of directed activity and independent working time. Along with some specific exercises, there will be presentations about abstraction and other relevant topics plus individual meetings to talk about your work as a whole. You will work on both quick studies and more developed pieces. The goal is that you will leave fired up with new ideas and a better understanding of what you want your work to convey.
Because of this focus, you need to have prior experience with cold wax and oils to register for the class. While the first day will include some technique review, the expectation is that you will have enough experience and skill to work confidently with basic techniques.
Your experience may include a prior workshop (followed by independent work), self-study with Rebecca's book, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, concepts & Conversations, with the video, Cold Wax Medium Workshop or active membership for at least one quarter in the online learning programme, Cold Wax Academy. Please visit www.coldwaxacademy for more information about these learning tools.
The Workshop takes place from the 3rd - 11th May 2022. The cost is $2,000 for the Workshop which includes tuition, shared cottage with private bedroom for 8 nights, lunch/dinner/dessert/tea/coffee, collection/delivery to the bus/train stations in Ballina, full use of the Ballinglen Library & facilities 24/7. Participants arrive on the 3rd and depart on the 11th. (The workshop is for seven days with arrival & departure day making it nine days total). Since earning her MFA in painting from Arizona State University in 1985, Rebecca Crowell has led a life focused on painting. When she is not traveling for teaching or for artist residencies (in such places as the Catalonia region of Spain, northern Sweden, and coastal areas of Ireland) she works almost daily in her studio in rural western Wisconsin. She draws significant influence from these residencies and travels, as well as from her surroundings at home. She is widely considered to be a pioneer in the use of cold wax medium for abstract painting. She has been teaching her original techniques in workshops across the US since 2009.
Rebecca brings professionalism & a working artist’s perspective to her classes. She is known for her innovative painting techniques involving cold wax medium and mixed media, and is represented by a number of fine art galleries in various locations including Dublin, Ireland; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Telluride, Colorado; Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Columbia, Missouri. Her representation with Gormleys Fine Art in Dublin has recently led to international exposure, including several European art fairs.
