Taking Chances : Experimental Drawing October 7th -12th
This drawing workshop will utilize various materials to realize work from quick, gestural studies to fully developed pieces. The class emphasis is on experimentation, expressing personal vision and taking chances without concern for
likeness or reality of the image. Exploration of sacred landscapes of northern Mayo may serve as jumping off point to inspire work. Touring local sites will be included in the class and artists will have the opportunity to reflect on how landscape, local folklore and Irish poetry can function in their work.
Students will work with various methods and materials such as encaustic medium, tape, charcoal, graphite, pastels, water media, peat, monotype printing, Spackle, cardboard and whatever else can be imagined to develop work that
echo’s each participant’s aesthetic interest and vision. The class will incorporate power point presentations that explore how drawing is used by contemporary artists as well as exercises that promote creative thinking. Artists may utilize the new Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Art’s multimedia facility for viewing videos and explore the museum’s
extensive collection including many works on paper. Students will explore areas around Ballinglen for found materials that can be incorporated into drawings. There will be a small materials fee and more information on materials list soon. All levels of experience are welcome in this class.
