Landscape Painting: The Quick Study
Instructors: Peter Schroth and Josette Urso
1st - 9th August, 2022
The landscape of County Mayo, Ireland is one of the most opulent and magical environments ever encountered by artists Peter Schroth and Josette Urso and they relish this opportunity to share their combined knowledge and appreciation with the participants. This workshop is open to painters working in oil, acrylic and watercolor. It is organized around the practice of the rapid study, where participants will produce numerous works each day. Paintings will be based on observation with investigations ranging from literal to abstract - an approach with significant historical precedent. It is a fundamental exercise and vital tool for artists at all levels, serving to advance understanding of both subject and medium while remaining attentive to immediate experience and sense of place. It is also especially well suited to capturing the complex and elusive qualities of shape, light and color inherent in the landscape. This very pure and direct approach heightens all of the painter's senses, helps maintain a freshness of handling and reminds the artist that “seeing” is a function of the mind, hand and eye.
