The Mylar Matrix
Self-adhesive metallized polyester film, commonly referred to as mylar, is an amazing material for use in collagraph printmaking. It can turn inexpensive wooden or plastic plates into smooth surfaces similar to zinc or copper for intaglio plate wiping. It can be drypointed, engraved, or layered to achieve many effects similar to etching without toxic chemistry. It can be used in combination with readily available tapes and self- adhesive vinyl materials to achieve complex surfaces and textures. The plates hold up to editioning and can later be reversed or de-constructed for interesting variant printings. The awe-inspiring shapes of the County Mayo sea coast and surroundings provide a rich source of imagery to sketch or photograph on outings-- while the print studio at Ballinglen will be our home base for printing and plate making throughout the week-long workshop. These layered collagraph plates are wonderful for relief rolling with inexpensive rollers and by using acetate stencils with rolling. Multiple plate images allow for visual complexity with tight registration. Students can later explore the wide variety of additional creative possibilities by having the mylar and vinyl materials laser-cut at sign shops back in the states--adding photo-based or digitally derived imagery to their matrix-building vocabulary.
This Workshop takes place from the 29th May - 4th of June 2019. The cost is $1,750 which includes tuition, shared cottage with private bedroom for 8 nights, lunch/dinner/dessert/tea/coffee, collection/delivery to the bus/train stations in Ballina, full use of the Ballinglen Library & facilities 24/7. Participants arrive on the 28th May and depart on the 5th June (The workshop is for seven days with arrival and departure day making it nine days).
