Ballinglen: USA/Ireland offers this unique opportunity to work at the prestigious Ballinglen Arts Foundation. Mayo, Ireland, for a group of twelve artists to spend nine days in rural Ireland drawing with artist Andrew Wykes.
Drawing from the Landscape
The workshop is mainly intended for intermediate and advanced artists with a desire to develop further. Andrew Wykes will provide group and individualized instruction and criticism. Discussions and presentations will provide the format for an intensive exciting learning experience. The focus is on the landscape and sea of this part of North Mayo, by experiencing at first hand our reaction to the magic of the place and its rich visual and atmospheric setting.
Wykes will present a series of ideas and explorations based on the perceptual and process in the studio and outside in order to understand that abstraction is the foundation behind ALL drawing and painting. Working from small drawings made in the landscape that will be developed into larger drawing investigations made in the studio. This will be the integral focus of the course. The drawings will not only be made with graphite, but extending the idea of drawing into the use of wet medium of acrylic and tempera paint. Wykes’ teaching is not concerned with techniques or embellishing a safe stereo typical style but more with an approach to developing a transitional way of working while improving upon the student's understanding of the formal elements. Sessions will address many of these elements including; the picture plane, shape, tension, surface, figure ground relationships, geometry, rhythm, space and light and especially analogy - the poetic emotive force behind our work.
The cost is $1,800 which includes tuition, shared cottage with private bedroom for 8 nights, lunch/dinner/dessert/tea/coffee, collection/dropoff to the bus/train stations in Ballina, full use of the Dolan/Maxwell library and facilities 24/7. Payment is made to Ballinglen: USA/Ireland using the payment button on the website www.ballinglenworkshops.com. Participants arrive on the 29th and depart on the 6th of June (The workshop is for seven days with arrival and departure day making it nine days).
