Andrew Wykes

Ballinglen: USA/Ireland offers this unique opportunity to work at the prestigious Ballinglen Arts Foundation. Mayo, Ireland, for a group of twelve artists to spend nine days in rural Ireland painting with artist Andrew Wykes.

Watercolour Painting Workshop
The workshop is mainly intended for artists with a desire to develop watercolour further or with no experience at all.
As watercolour is semi-transparent, the white of the paper gives a natural luminosity to the washes of colour. White areas of the image often are merely left unpainted to expose the paper. Watercolour is very manageable outside and transports well due to its quick drying. It allows for exploring subtle effects it is very forgiving and can be used in many different ways with pencil wash laying, subtracting, etc.
Andrew Wykes will provide group and individualized instruction and criticism. Discussions and presentations will provide the format for an intensive exciting learning experience. The focus is on the landscape and sea of this part of North Mayo, by experiencing the first-hand reaction to the magic of the place and its rich visual and atmospheric setting.
Wykes will present a series of ideas and explorations based on the perceptual and process in the studio and outside in order to understand that abstraction is the foundation behind ALL drawing and painting. Many examples of artist work will be presented
Students will fill a watercolour pad during the week from outside observations  Working from these ideas made in the landscape will be developed into  investigations made in the studio. Wykes’ teaching is not concerned with techniques or embellishing a safe stereotypical style but more with an approach to developing a transitional way of working while improving upon the student's understanding of the formal elements.  Sessions will address many of these elements including; the picture plane, shape, tension, surface, figure-ground relationships, geometry, rhythm, space and light and especially analogy -  the poetic emotive force behind our work.
Participants will bring their own materials. A list of specific items will be send close to the date of the class.
